the programs has many other very nice tweaks. complicated, but worth the effort.

Monitorsa are 16:10 or 16:9; there is 1.7x more space left to right; placing Taskbar vertically wastes less space, at least to my perceptin. I primarily work in the right 2./3rds of the monitor, so getting to start button is a quick fast up & right; indeed, since the cursor rides the top edsge of the screen (no wrap, no screen above0, the cursor teds to slide along the edge, making the move to start button very easy.

i think we might be at an inflection point were we have the chance to put cioovid-19 done to having it be endemic, so perhaps a part of yearly flu shot? if we just keep up the easy things like social distancing, masking, washing hands, stay out of crowds for a few months more. but I doubt we can do it. worst case: boom, a new variant that is different enough that the vaxx is ineffective (which omicron might be, at least for non-boosted, and perhaps even then) and causes delta-level hospitalizations and deaths/ all spreading mildly thru the summer, then hitting like delta did in sept/nov 2022, just like the flu always does, ffs.

might be harsh of me to say it, but 7% rise in food costs is nontrivial, but is it a catastrophe?  if no extra budget for it, avail, might have to cut back.  noone need die from this due to lack of food?

it could be that everyone is already doing the stretch the food budget as far as possible, but not sure.

how would I do it?   go 2 days meatless?  not sure wer’e doing any veg meals on purpose, but regadless, adding 2 more nonmeat days would probably do it, and be healtyier to boot.

I’m not seeing much discussion about the likelihood of seeing a worse-than-Delta variant coming from the Omicron wave. I’m pretty sure more transmission means more mutations means more chances a variant just as transmissible AND Delta-or-worse outcomes.

Perhaps Omicron, being fast & weak, can only make faster & weaker versions? I hope?

We should be careful to remember that even unlikely events happen.  yes, it may be more evidence, or clearer links, or whatevs points to china lab-leak, probably accidental, but at best we can assume that.  but for the purposes of heavy retaliation, like war or searious trade sanctions, we need better than an assumption.  even if the evidence suggest 90% that the lab-leak is correct and china intdended to make c-19 as a weapon to the rest of theld, the 10% oustide chance is common ennough.

A possible solution to Dave Wawrykow’s concerns in his letter “COVID-19 test kit roll out was handled badly” of Dec. 23rd:

Use Canada Post!

Deliver two tests to each address by Canada Post ASAP if not earlier. Halt delivery of junk mail, catalogues, political messages and (gasp!) bills to ensure letter carriers aren’t overwhelmed. Target the obvious hot spots for the first deliveries. All that lovely data collected from the past few waves can be illuminating in this regard.

Repeat as required until every household has sufficient tests. Smarter people than I can determine the correct number per household. And have them deliver a few genuine N-95 masks, too. Looks like we might be needing them soon.

Added benefit: no one has to stand in line for hours in the cold. And Canada Post would be seen as heroes!

To those whose reaction is the typical anti-Canada Post knee-jerk, I counter that Canada Post does this exact job, day in, day out, passing a letter carrier with a huge sack by every address in the country. They deliver billions of items each year of similar size and shape. It’s like, their job, man!

Worried about the loss of revenue from all that much-desired junk mail and catalogue delivery? Canada Post is a crown corporation; the government can just ignore this “loss”. Or just cut a cheque to cover the losses.

Full disclosure: both my mother and mother-in-law are former posties. But neither of them had any input in this letter.

Idea: why not use Canada Post to deliver rapid tests & N95 masks to everyone? Could replace junk mail and other useless mail?

Two weeks ago would have been better.  We knew a winter surge was coming; the Omicron variant is making it easier to see.

why not use the post office to deliver rapid tests and masks? they walk past evety cdn address every dy. they should habe the infrastructure to get this done. target most required places first, then move outwards.
contra: can rapid tests survice being left ina mailboxoutside for days? capacity, especially duirting xmas? so prioritize tests over junk mail?  use the caf to aid in distributin too.

how big are rapidtests?  if mailpersons can carry junk mail for everyone, they can probably habndle rapid tests; gov’t can offset the losses from junk mail no being delivered.

oooohhh. they look kinda big. so we need to make a much more compact version.

Wordpad in RTF file format. Opened at login by a batch file, backed up every hour if there are changes. Re-opened every hour, which will bring it to focus.

Wordpad ’cause Notepad doesn’t support graphics (I screen snip things dozens of times a day, and they usually go into this file).

RTF format so my back file can chop it up for archival purposes. (Eventually! I know how to do it, but haven’t written the code yet…) And minimal format that will support graphics.

Wordpad has some formatting and such. but other than ~~strikeout~~ (which indicates I’ve dealt with the issue or otherwise don’t need the text anymore), I avoid. This is where the text goes, with supporting graphics. Copy to Word for final formatting or WordPress blog post to share with the world.

I call this file my “stream of consciousness”. I try to type everything into it. This post was written in there and the pasted into the BB editor.

I am not a writer. I made a living coding in MS-DOS BASIC back in the day.
